How To Street Race
For some people, having a fast car with a massive engine just won't cut it. They will always have the need to compare the speed of their cars to others and feel pride after leaving someone in the dust.
Some say the temptation for speed was always there, even with horses, we needed to know which is faster. And street racing is still going strong today, with crowds of people gathering to participate or cheer on illegal racing competitions. And despite the fact that it almost always ends up in an arrest and sometimes a fatality, it's not hard to understand why street racing is so popular.
While we won't encourage you to participate in any street racing, we'll still leave you with these 15 unspoken rules that every real street racer knows and has to follow, just in case...
15 Early Hours Of The Morning
If you're engaging in illegal street racing, it's always essential to make sure you're not endangering anyone's lives, and you're not getting caught by the police. That's why racing in the early hours of the morning is preferable, because it's safer for you and the community. For people who like to sleep, we suggest gallons of coffee.
14 First Or Worst Rule
This one is dedicated to those of you who are interested in drag racing. One of the most fundamental rules in drag racing is known as first or worst. If two drivers commit a foul, the one who commits it first automatically loses the race. However, if the fouls are different, the driver who committed the worst foul loses.
13 Classification By Tires
As surreal as this sounds, the classification of cars in illegal street racing happens by tires. Because the modifications of vehicles are becoming crazier every day, racers have come up with a simple, yet a smart solution. Various cars get classified in "big tire" or "small tire." As weird as it may sound to you, it makes sense. The bigger the tires, the more grip they have compared to smaller tires.
12 What You Need To Do Before A Race
There are a few things you need to do before you start the race. First, you rev your engine. It's essential to not overdo it, especially with the throttle. You might regret it. The next thing you should do is stop at the light and pull close to the car you want to race against. Try to pay attention to the behavior of the driver and his vehicle. If he wants to compete with you, he will engage. As soon as you agree, you'll need to wait for the green light and speed up.
11 Tell The Truth About Your Car
When you lie about your car or give misleading information, you're not only endangering your own life but the lives of the other racers as well. It's possible that in street racing, your competitors will adjust their driving style according to the information you provided. If that information is wrong, the possibilities of an accident happening are much higher. Even if all ends well, you will be disqualified from the race.
10 Communication By Lights
In street racing, you don't text someone while you're in the car and ask them whether they want to race. Nope. Instead, you flash your lights a couple of times. If the other driver flashes back at you, the race is on. On the other hand, if they hit the brakes, you're out of luck and have to invite someone else.
9 Highway Racing
Besides races in the early morning, there are many other races organized usually in random hours of the days, on the highway. In this scenario, you'll have to compete with a stranger. You either start the race by honking three times or wait for the light. The most important rule here is that the competition ends as soon as someone hits a traffic jam or light.
8 Hire A Lawyer
This rule might sound scary, but if you're planning to engage regularly and sincerely in street racing, you'll need a lawyer. The chances that you'll get caught up by police, and you'll be fined or even sent to prison are quite high. Plus, having a lawyer makes you feel mentally prepared for any circumstances on the road.
7 Have An Escape Plan
Ah yes, the two words that can excite any racer out there. We know you daydream about Fast and Furious, Mad Max, and all the crazy police chase scenes. But, in real life, being chased by the police is not that fun. Especially when you don't know the roads well and don't have an escape plan. A hidden rule when it comes to racing is that you should always have an escape plan and know all the back roads.
6 Suitable Race Clothing
The street racing rules are always up to discussion, and they are continuously changing. But there's one that's been there ever since racing started. Don't try to appear edgy, or brave by wearing regular clothes. On the opposite, most races require the drivers to wear a leather jacket, long pants, leather boots, and leather gloves.
5 Competition License?
While racing on public streets is illegal in almost every country, there are specific locations where small private races are allowed. In that case, you will need to have a competition license. The license will enable you to be a member of the sporting motor club. Although this is not such a secret rule, it's always good to know that there are other ways to follow your passions, without risking time in prison.
4 Racer Conduct
A fundamental rule when it comes to racing is always to keep quiet and friendly behavior. During the race is necessary not to talk, especially if you're offensive. In such cases, the moderators of the race will have to take action, and probably kick you out of the race. In street racing, the only thing that needs to talk is your car and your driving.
3 No Burnouts
Part of the reason to become a street racer is to earn all the glory and fame. However, seeking attention through burnouts is heavily frowned upon in the racing community. It's pretty cool, we admit, but at the same time, it will be uncomfortable and even dangerous for the other drivers. Make sure to keep your behavior in check.
2 No Passengers
Having your girlfriend witness how fast your car is can fulfill your ego. After all, what's the point of being famous if your closest people don't know how capable you're. Nonetheless, passengers aren't allowed in street racing. The best thing your girlfriend can do is cheer for you with the rest of the public.
1 The Helmet Requirement
No matter whether you're participating in a street race or a drag race, never try to race without a helmet. It's not permitted and heavily frowned upon. That's why in street racing there's a special rule called "the helmet requirement" which stands alone form the suitable race clothing. Just because an activity is illegal, doesn't mean it has to be unsafe. On the opposite, rules like this one make it easier for everyone to enjoy racing.
